Cold Steel 20PH benefits

Cold Steel 20PH Review by J.L.

I used it for fishing and hunting. It is a inexpensive all purpose knife. The knife is easy enough to sharpen and
keeps its edge well. The blade is long enough to stick small to small-medium hogs. The knife is not too heavy and not to light. I liked it so much that I bought four more of these. If you know a hunter or fisherman, these will make a great gift. I must mention that the metal used on this blade is strong. I stuck it into a skull with decent penetration and it did not brake. Use it for batoning wood, carving, whittling, skinning, sticking, survival, fishing, hunting, or just messing around with. It is up to the job. The only downside about this knife is that in TX a knife blade cannot be longer than 5.5 inches for daily carry (stupid laws).

Cold Steel 20PH Review by K. Ferriman (Ohio USA)

I have a good number of Cold Steel knifes, and when I saw the Outdoorsman Lite, I knew it was a knife I had to have. First off, if you are going to get one, get it from Amazon. I ordered one from Cold Steel, they told me it was on back order and it would be 30 days, that's fine. 30+ days later I see it on Amazon and call Cold Steel to see how my order was coming, they told me it was still on back order and would take 30 to 45 days. I canceled my order and Amazon had one in my hand a few days later.

When I got the knife, I was impress. The knife is the right kind of heavy (but not too heavy). The blade could be thicker, but is thick enough. As the other review stated, the "bone breaker" will not be as good was the $300 San Mai III Outdoorsman's. The handle is great for the price - the grip is just as good as the more expensive Cold Steel knives I own, IMHO. And, the sheath was nice - but cheap. It was everything I expected. It was very sharp and cuts great.

I was also surprise/confusion about butt of the knife - the tang was sticking through. First off, the tang is thick, making this a good knife. And, the handle was tight - the glue or whatever they used was holding well. That said, the tang was still sticking out and it bothered me. I called Cold Steel's customer service and they told me that the catalog was right - the tang should NOT have been sticking out (the catalog says that tang is fully covered). I sent it back to Amazon and asked for a replacement. I got it the next day, but it looked exactly the same! I went online and looked for posts from other customers and the ones I found all had the tang sticking out the back. So, I kept is as it is still a great knife, especially for the money.

If Cold Steel would have told me that the tang was sticking out to use for hammering, or if there was a hole to put a lanyard through, I would have said fine, but this seems to be a cosmetic mistake. I don't like it. Others may not be bothered by it, after all this is a rather inexpensive knife.

Bottom line, if you want a cheap knife for camping, this one will do - flaw and all.

-----------------------

Update: Cold Steel now admits that the tang is suppose to stick out to use for striking a blow to the skull of an animal. So, it was not a cosmetic defect after all. The have a better image of it now on their website, featuring the tang sticking out. Seeing that the metal is stainless steel, it shouldn't be an issue. I still think it looks odd, but that's just me.

Cold Steel 20PH Review by Arwythur

Buy 2, or a Dozen... they are sharp, light, hold an edge well, work great as everything from throw aways to stashed pieces for the home, car, Motorcycle, or as a backup to your handgun. I make holsters of all shapes and kinds, and on my shoulder rigs I offer these knives as an option along with a single spare mag holder for under the dominant hand. I have used them, and abused them, and I would back them 100%.... and if you lose one, hell... they are cheap enough to not lose any sleep over.

Cold Steel 20PH::Description

As a nod to the great success of our Pendleton Lite Hunter, we have decided to make more economical versions of our popular Tanto and Outdoorsman knives. They resemble their more expensive versions in that they feature similar blades, guards, handles, and pommels. The only significant change was the use of slightly thinner 4116 Krupp Stainless Steel blades, and the implementation of less costly materials in the handles. The handles are made in two parts. They feature a Polypropylene guard, pommel, and core section, which totally envelopes the knives' full tangs. The core is then over-molded in a deeply checkered Kraton for a non-slip grip that's impervious to the elements and is easily cleaned with soap and water. To carry your knives safely and conveniently in the field, we are including a pouch-style Cordura sheath complete with belt loop so it can be easily worn on the belt or tucked into your pack or tackle box.
